MUAC Hut Bookings and Info

The Massey University Alpine Club hut is located 14km from Ohakune and 3km below the Turoa Ski Field on Mount Ruapehu.

Our hut is a basic alpine tramping and mountaineering hut. We hold a privileged position above the hairpin and under 3-4 hours hiking distance from the summit. We are the only hut on this side of Mount Ruapehu.

The hut is available to book for the MUAC members, students and the public.

Pricing:

SUMMER (OCTOBER-MAY)

  • Members: $650 per night, whole hut
  • Non Members: $700 per night, whole hut

WINTER (JUNE-SEPTEMBER)

  • Members: $750 per night, whole hut
  • Non Members: $800 per night, whole hut

We require a minimum of 50% of your booking cost to be paid before your stay, along with a refundable key bond of $50. We accept cash in person or bank transfer.

Important note for making online bookings:

For purposes of booking through our online booking engine, please select number of adults as '1' and number of children as '0' to access the availability engine. Please indicate the actual number of occupants in the special requests field of your booking. Note the actual maximum number of occupants in the Turoa Hut is 24.

Once you have found an available date then you must select the appropriate rate plan (summer/winter) for the period of your booking, and add a refundable key bond to your booking. Failure to do so will see your booking altered by the Hut Bookings Officer to reflect the correct pricing scheme.

Once you have made your online booking the Hut Bookings Officer will contact you with additional details regarding your stay. Please make sure you read our Cancellation Policy before your booking.

Cancellation policy:

Cancellations must be made at least 2 weeks before your booking date, excluding extreme weather related cancellations which must be made 48 hours before the booking date for a full refund.   
The Massey University Alpine Club Committee reserves the right to cancel your booking at any stage for any reasonable purpose; including the following:
  1. Your group name, or individuals associated with your group are recorded against the visitor blacklist (occurs when visitors neglect hut rules set out in the Hut Users Manual, sustain unreasonable, careless, or reckless damage to the hut, fail to return the key, or any other reasonable cause justified by members of the MUAC Executive Committee).
  2. The Volcanic Alert Level (VAL) or recent volcanic activity poses a significant risk to the hut and its occupants (as deemed by the MUAC Executive Committee).
  3. The MUAC Executive Committee opts to close the hut for any reason, importantly for maintenance purposes to ensure the hut remains compliant with regulations.
  4. Adverse weather which may place the structure and its occupants at significant levels of risk is forecast for a period during the booking duration.
  5. Any other reason the MUAC Executive Committee deems necessary to ensure the safety of the hut and its occupants.
